Firefighters battled the flames using eight water jets and a ground monitor, as well an aerial ladder platform, high volume pump and a stinger appliance.

No injuries have been reported, but police have confirmed the size of the fire triggered Operation Merlin - an emergency services plan which comes into effect during major incidents.

In an update posted at 4.30pm, a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire fighting operations are continuing using aerial support from both Manchester and Lancashire fire service.

"The fire is now under control however there is likely to be a number of fire engines at the scene for some time yet dampening down.

Approximately 30 homes were evacuated due to the blaze as a precaution and Grane Road was shut in both directions.

The slip road connecting the A56 to Grane Road and a section of Jubilee Road was also been closed while the fire is brought under control.

"We are currently dealing with a large fire at the bottom of the Grane Road near the A56 and Grane Road is currently closed off," a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.
