Raising the problem of damp homes with Calico

Parliamentary recess allowed me to spend the whole week in Burnley. I was keen to catch up with businesses and deal with problems constituents had approached me about.

I went to see the Burnley Series, a “Dragons’ Den” style event, which allows young people to pitch for funding for local communities projects. It was great to see their enthusiasm and I was impressed with their ideas. Matt is doing a great job with this.

I was also busy at Crow Wood, visiting Andy Brown discussing the visit of Vince Cable. It was great he came to Burnley to officially open Burnley Bridge and see how far our town has developed in the past year.

I visited the Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital to view the work of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. It is a wonderful facility that serves people in Burnley, too, and I was delighted to be shown round the new high-tech radiography unit and chemotherapy centre. They were also very interested to hear of the Scanner Appeal and provided me with an application pack for funding. I am pleased to say it has already been done and fingers crossed we are successful.

I have been receiving a lot of complaints about housing allocations from Calico with many homes affected by damp. I spoke to the maintenance manager about the damp and a senior housing officer, too, in relation to a number of constituents. I hope there will be many positive resolutions to the problems I flagged up.

I was delighted to collect a cheque from the 110 club for £1,150 which is fantastic and I am grateful for all their hard work.

I also attended a reunion of members of the Howard and Bullough drawing office where I served my time as an apprentice. It was great to see many of the guys and remember our apprenticeship days.

I was also delighted to go to a meeting to hear about the BT and Lancashire County Council initiative bringing superfast broadband across Lancashire. I was delighted to hear Burnley will have the most coverage with 98% which is great news.
