Where’s democracy in the bulldozing of community centre?

Well done Burnley Council, I hope you are proud of yourselves! Allowing a planning application to be approved for an area to become a meadow (next to a main road), and a vital community resource for children to be demolished, all within the same application.

Of course I am talking about the Glebe Street Youth and Community Centre. Councillors responsible for this decision, I would like to make two points:

The role of local council, according to LGA: They deliver a range of services at a community level and their role is to represent the local community, provide services to meet local needs and improve quality of life and community wellbeing.

The definition of democracy, according to any dictionary: democracy di-mok’re-si, n – a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people collectively, and is administered by them or by officers appointed by them; the common people; a state of society characterised by recognition of equality or rights and privileges for all.

Members of Burnley Council responsible for this decision, the people you represent, in this instance, are the people of Burnley Wood not Keepmoat, and building more houses will bring more families. So you should be expanding the Glebe Street Centre to meet local needs, not knocking it down.

As for improving quality of life and community wellbeing, all you’ve managed to do is fragment a community by making people feel threatened into fighting for what they have worked hard to create individually.

If this monumental injustice had occurred between one individual to another it would be found elsewhere in this newspaper, as a report on a crime.
