Thanks for helping Chernobyl children

We have come to the end of another successful month-long visit of our group of 12 children from Belarus.

This would not have been possible without the help and support of many individuals and organisations from Clitheroe and beyond.

I am always humbled by the generosity of the local community who give us their time, expertise, hospitality, premises and financial support during the visit. Without this ongoing kindness the charity would be unable to continue.

It may be 28 years since reactor four at Chernobyl exploded, but the effects of the world’s worst nuclear disaster continue to cast a long shadow over the lives of people living in the fallout region.

We believe the fresh air and good food with plenty of fruit and vegetables (free from radiation) the children enjoy during their time with us must surely be of benefit to their developing immune systems.

During this year’s visit the children and their interpreters have enjoyed many organised days out and, due to exceptionally good weather, plenty of fun days playing outside in the beautiful Ribble Valley.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank most sincerely all those who have helped us in any way to make this year’s visit the success that it has been. In particular I would like to thank the United Reformed Church who allow us to use their premises for the entire visit. We are most grateful.

I would also like to give a big thank you to Natallia Robinson, who along with her colleagues at Pentland Brands Ltd in Great Harwood, raised over £1,000 for The Friend’s of Chernobyl’s Children, Clitheroe Branch during this year’s visit. Your effort is much appreciated.

Although this year’s visit is over, the fund-raising must continue. Our next fund-raiser will be the Pud Fest on August 9th. Please do pop along and sample some delicious puddings in support of FOCC if you can.
