Store go-ahead: so much of ‘Shop Local’ campaign

I write in regard to the Morrisons Local Barrowford development which seems to be receiving very little attention in your newspaper.

Literally hundreds of residents are up in arms about the way this seems to be happening through the back door.

Booths went through a public consultation lasting several years, whereas Morrisons appear to have commenced work without asking anyone whether they were wanted (and their recent performance indicates a decline in popularity).

Upon contacting the planning department at Pendle Council, I was advised the new building had received permission for four small retail units which could now be combined into one large unit without the need for any further planning. In other words, this store is happening whether the public like it or not - and they certainly don’t.

I might add Morrisons have promised to create new jobs in the village, however, the truth is existing staff will relocate from their store in Nelson.

At the same time, scores of jobs and a post office may be lost from the village.

Barrowford already has significant traffic and parking problems, which are only going to be exacerbated - remember we’re supposed to be a village.

It’s also worth noting several family businesses, which have served the village for decades, will face ruin as a result of this decision.

I call upon the local council to consider what they have done and take responsibility when businesses start to close.

So much for the much-vaunted “Shop Local” campaign.
