Rescued from wartime bomb attack

The “wartime shell” unearthed last week could well have been close to where I lived when being evacuated to Woone Lane, Clitheroe, near to the old Primrose Mill, now long gone.

During the height of the London Blitz, mum and I had to be rescued by firemen late one night from inside our yard’s air raid shelter in Leyton, East London, when it was left tilting inside the rim of a bomb crater after a parachute mine had exploded, taking down nearby houses.

A neighbour had fallen into the crater, breaking his leg, in an attempt to get to us!
