MP shopuld choose his friends wisely

On a social evening some years ago, I was introduced by Gordon Birtwistle in his home to his good friend Coun. Harry Brooks.

I don’t suppose I will ever know where their friendship went wrong but have read in your columns the most vitriolic character assassinations of Gordon by his former friend. To my knowledge these attacks have received no reply from Gordon, quite understandably, as they were unworthy of same.

Just to clear up another matter referred to by correspondent Andy Devanney recently. Gordon was managing director of Stuart Engineering Ltd when the company went into difficulties. Gordon had put all his eggs into one basket so to speak when this large customer decided to source their goods abroad. This unexpected move by the customer caused the bank to withdraw their support. As the company was limited liability this did not affect his home or possessions.

For all his faults, and I know most of them, Gordon has made a splendid MP for Burnley and they are lucky to have him. A word of advice Gordon, in future choose your friends more wisely. With friends such as Harry, who needs enemies.
