LETTER: Youth unemployment should be key focus

THE Government would be quick to take credit if the unemployment figure was to drop from 2.6 million.

Therefore, they should accept criticism for the rising figure equally. Instead of blaming the world recession and anything else that cannot be directly attributed to themselves.

In view of the predicted protests and riots of next summer, focus should be made on the unemployment of young people.

It is very disheartening for them to attend school, work hard at college, attain various qualifications and find no jobs available.

In this country we have a right to protest against policies. Instead of concentrating on deploying water canons, rubber bullets, tear gas and baton rounds against the young people in our society we should be doing everything possible to give them a future in society.

The economic policy of this Government has eradicated many first opportunities for young people at the start of their working lives.
