LETTER: MP missed chance to show he was Eurosceptic

Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson fits the bill if his “From the House” column last week is any guide.

In the last election, he admits to standing on a Eurosceptic manifesto to bring back power to the UK. Many, many of his constituents will fervently support him in that sentiment.

Mr Stephenson had a real chance of showing the depth of his feelings the other day when 80 or so MPs defied a three-line whip to vote for a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU.

Mr Stephenson did not venture into the voting lobby with the rebels. Why? Apparently he wants a debate and new negotiations with the EU on powers we want returned and how much we contribute to the Union.

The ideas, obviously, are sound. But at a time when our bargaining power and status in Europe is hardly at its most compelling, it is unlikely that our MP’s hopes will be realised in the near future.

If our own MP hasn’t already been made aware of the latest MORI poll, it shows the “Get us out of Europe” feeling is at a 30-year high.

Good omen or bad for a Eurosceptic, Mr Stephenson?
