LETTER: Liberals are threatening to restrict civil liberties

I READ that Treasury Minister Vince Cable has said that should the economic position change, and should strikes impose serious damage to our economic and social fabric, the pressure on the Government to act would ratchet up.

It is interesting that a self-professed liberal is threatening to restrict civil liberties at a time when millions of public service workers and their families are challenging his Government’s proposals to massively cut their pensions and living standards in retirement.

But how are we judge the consistency of the proposal? Is he proposing to jail and sequester the funds of the bankers who clearly imposed serious damage to our economic and social fabric when they collapsed the economy across the world?

Indeed, is he proposing this for his Government, who through £82 billion of cuts to our public services are imposing serious damage to millions, and our country’s economic and social fabric?

I think not, but increasingly the country would wish it.
