LETTER: Jimmy McIlroy’s MBE is much deserved

The Clarets Trust is delighted Jimmy McIlroy has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Jimmy is an honorary Life Member of the Trust and has supported us on several occasions.

This award recognises his great contribution to football both local and as a Northern Ireland international – truly one of the greatest Clarets legends ever to wear the claret and blue, but also a great contributor to charities locally.

He has always been very much a modest man and a person always so much in demand by people locally.

This award comes following a testimonial year and his recognition of being made a Freeman of the Borough of Burnley.

As MP for Burnley I put forward his name on more than one occasion for such an award and it is great to see him at last get this recognition which he so richly deserves.

It was a delight to watch him as a player in the 50s and 60s and it has always been a great pleasure to have met him – and worked with him – on so many occasions in later years.

Congratulations Jimmy on this award, so very much deserved.
