LETTER: It’s 2012, not 1500, and time to ditch the monarchy

DEAR condescending monarchist Mr Sutcliff - your constitutional monarchy has the power to appoint or dismiss government ministers, grant honours, dissolve parliament plus many more - a lot for an unelected head of state.

In the year 2012 we still have a queen - are we not living in the 1500s with our head of state? You say George VI never left this country during the war. Perhaps he was afraid the brother he stabbed in the back, Edward VIII, would return.

The argument about republicans is not lost: perhaps it is just the beginning and will get stronger when Charles becomes king.
