LETTER: Great to get free swimming returned

It WAS a real privilege to propose an amendment on behalf of the Labour Group for the return of free swimming for under 16s at the last meeting of the council.

It was a disgrace free swimming was cut by the council 18 months ago and to get it back from April 1st shows just what Labour can do even when in opposition. Unfortunately the proposal to help the local economy by providing free town centre parking on 12 Saturdays through the year was defeated by the Lib Dems, even though council officers confirmed the money was available.

Providing help for hard-pressed shoppers, traders and the local economy generally will have to wait but it remains a high priority for Labour councillors.

Coun. MARK TOWNSEND
