LETTER: EU to blame for scrapping of weekly bin collections

Despite a pledge made by Eric Pickles, the Tory Local Government Secretary, to preserve weekly bin collections when the Coalition Government came to power, saying they were “a basic right for every English man and woman”, over half-a-million homes have seen them scrapped.

The problem is that councils are now faced with landfill taxes of £70 for every ton of non-recycled rubbish.

Again, what is not reported is the landfill taxes are the result of an EU directive caused by a usual “one size fits all” solution to a problem in the Netherlands and Sweden, who were running out of landfill sites. Yet more broken promises, with the true causes buried in the murk of the power of the EU over our current political elite and as usual we are the ones who pay the bill.
