LETTER: Did cash machine ‘swallow’ £100?

IN response to Sue Driver’s letter last week, the “person” who stole her cash may well be the very machine that gave it to her in the first place.

It is not generally known that cash machines are programmed to take dispensed money back inside if the notes requested are not removed from the cash-out slot within a few seconds. This is to cover the very situation she described, namely being distracted. It often happens, apparently. What she needs to do is to take proof of her withdrawal transaction to her own bank (the withdrawal receipt or a bank statement) and explain what happened. If there is a matching discrepancy between the cash machine’s records of money paid out against the money left in the machine at the end of the working day, she will be given her £100.
