LETTER: Assheton Arms has always been a traditional pub

There was a confusing comment in your front page story (November 17th edition) regarding the takeover of The Assheton Arms.

It reports the new tenant “plans to turn the centuries old Assheton Arms into a traditional pub, serving real ales and great British food”. Whether this quote can be attributed to the new tenant or merely the reporter’s interpretation, it is a slur on the family who have been running it for the past 28 years as “a traditional pub, serving real ales and great British food”.

No change needed, but what I fear we might get is a tarted up version of what the make-over people see as a traditional pub, with inflated prices for the food and ale just because a so-called TV personality is to put his name to the business.

Let us hope Lord Clitheroe maintains his idiosyncratic principles with regard to the pub.

PETER HARGREAVES,

Sabden
