Happy days dancing in the church hall

When I was in my early teens, it was open for dancing on Saturday nights – 50/50 dancing, old time or modern , the Polly Glide, St Bernard’s Waltz, barn dance, quickstep, foxtrot, modern waltz, be bop.

It was just a couple of bob to get in.

The man who put the records on was called John Garrett. He worked for Seed’s garage in Burnley Road. He had two wind-up turntables with electric pick-ups and you changed the needle after every record.

Don’t forget they were all 78 rpms then and were heavy.

I know all this because I started to help him.

He had a little Ford 8 van for his gear.

His last job at night was to turn Tobias’s radio off which was in a hut opposite the parish church which ran the piped radio at the top end of Colne – American Forces Network, Radio Luxembourg, Home Service and the Light Programme.

There was no television then!
