Burnley Wood Community Group award ‘misleading’

I was a little concerned about what I read in the July 11th edition of the Burnley Express regarding the award for Burnley Wood Youth and Community Group at Burnley Community Sports Awards.

I couldn’t understand the Brian Fenn Community Award, won by the Burnley Wood Youth and Community Centre, which stated the group ran a lunch club. I feel this is a little misleading as it has NEVER ran a lunch club in the entire time it has been open.

The only lunch club that used to be on Burnley Wood recreation ground was the “little house” that sat on its own years ago. A few loyal residents of the area ran the lunch club from that building – many of whom now attend Burnley Wood Community Centre Luncheon Club in Springfield Road.

The Youth and Community Centre has done an odd Christmas dinner that was prepared off site as its kitchen isn’t big enough to accommodate preparing and managing a lunch club.

I’m also under the impression the keep-fit class run by Burnley Council’s Healthy lifestyle team deso not use this centre anymore and now also run this activity from Springfield Road Centre, and has done so for more than two years.

The Youth and Community Centre runs a craft session for children on Thursday evenings and a Friday night disco. The only other activity I am aware of is the pensioners’ bingo session run by the senior residents of the area on a Wednesday afternoon.

I feel the award was misleading the residents of Burnley Wood when it is indeed the other centre in Springfield Road that offers these activities and lots more besides.
