50p a week to empty your green bin

In response to Martin B. Hodgson’s letter, I would like briefly to explain the new charge for garden waste collection.

Firstly it will be a subscription scheme – people can choose to opt in and have their green bins emptied by our crews, or if they prefer they can make their own arrangements. For example they may wish to compost their garden waste at home or take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The new scheme will start in midsummer and until then the present collection arrangements will continue. We will be writing soon to all householders affected with details of how it will work and how they can sign up for it.

The charge has become necessary because, like all councils, we have to raise additional income to finance our services. A number of councils have recently introduced, or are considering introducing, this charge.

Charging £25 a year per green bin will help us to keep refuse/recycling, cleansing and other services running in Pendle.

It works out at just about 50p per week.
