People never cease to amaze me. Some of the time that is happy amazement as people do incredible things for incredible reasons.
Many people really do go above and beyond the call of duty to make lives better for everyone.
Hats off to each and every one of them and please keep up the good work.
But, unfortunately, most of the time the amazement I feel is a completely different emotion, something more akin to sheer jaw-dropping disbelief.
And that is just what I felt this week over the action of a group, or groups, of mindless thugs.
Bonfire Night, love it or hate it, is one of the nights all the emergency services must dread.
Every single one of the paramedics, firefighters and police officers on duty knows that they are going to be in for one of the busiest, of not the busiest, nights of the year.
They will have to deal with some truly horrible situations.
And what they really don’t need, and what they really should never, ever, have to put up with is idiots hurling fireworks at them while they are already putting their lives at risk tackling fires.
Such actions basically boil down to stupidity and a total lack of respect.
The yobs need to be found and they need to be dealt with seriously.
People who know who the perpetrators are needs to spill the beans, name and shame, and get the idiots in court as soon as practically possible.
If that doesn’t happen, some areas could become no-go zones for the emergency services, places where they don’t feel safe and places where, ultimately, they may no longer go.
So if you’re one of the numbskulls who thinks throwing fireworks at anyone, never mind people actively trying to make life safer for the rest of us, is a good idea, think again.
It might seem like a prank, but what you are actually doing is messing about with explosives and they can have lethal consequences.
