Whitsuntide Walks make their way through Colne

Maureen’s late father, the Rev. Frank Gibson, can be seen on the right with the members of his church, the Primitive Methodist Chapel, which stood at the top of Skipton Road, Colne, for almost a century.

A truly fine and imposing place of worship, the chapel was built in 1880 at the cost of £2,570, being one of the tallest buildings in town.

Note the onlookers standing outside Frank Huggins Newsagents and Rennie Goth, the tobacconists, in Albert Road.

The Whit Walks were always a huge occasion in Colne’s religious calendar, with the annual procession taking over an hour as it wended its way through town.

Sadly, just three years from our pictured 1958 scene, the very last full scale, Whitsuntide, Colne procession took place in 1961. It was the end of a glorious era.
