Support a ‘living wage’ not a ‘minimum wage’

News that around 25% of Burnley employees are being paid less than the unofficial “living wage” of £7.65 an hour will not come as too much of a surprise.

Actually, Burnley fares better than a number of other areas in the North-West when it comes to rates of pay.

Burnley Council has led the way by pledging to pay a living wage minimum to its employees even though it is shackled by ever-increasing financial constraints.

The town’s MP and council leader have both voiced their support for a living rather than minimum wage, which is currently set at £6.50 an hour.

It is a cause worth backing.
