Prostate Scanner Appeal benefits from 20/20 cricket match

I recently spent the whole of my time in Burnley due to the death and funeral of my brother-in-law. Despite it being a sad time, I was able to spend time with family and focus my attention on Burnley issues.

Monday started out and about in Whittlefield. Local councilor Tom Porter had invited me to talk to residents and it was good to hear firsthand about problems.

Tuesday morning was the funeral, a very sad event indeed but a celebration of the life of my brother-in-law who died aged 70 of lung cancer.

I then attended a public meeting in Worsthorne about the proposal to stop the bus service there. The room was packed with 250 people expressing concern that the end of this vital service would mean elderly people would be cut off. I took all the issues on board and decided myself and three members of the community would visit TransDev on Thursday morning to discuss the issue.

On Wednesday I attended a council meeting as I am still a borough councillor. There were lively debates on issues affecting the people of Burnley.

On Thursday morning I visited the bus depot with the residents and was delighted to come away with an agreement the bus service will carry on. It was exactly what we were hoping for. I spent the evening with Worsthorne parish councillor Paula Riley meeting residents.

Friday morning started with a meeting with Hugh Bramwell at Burnley College who showed me the major expansion of engineering apprenticeship facilities. The growth of facilities in recent years is remarkable. It is wonderful that many young people in town are being trained as apprentice engineers on the best equipment. I was also presented with a photo taken when I was an apprentice bricklayer at college. This brought back great memories!

I then had an important meeting with Steve Rumbelow to discuss Government funding proposals for companies in the area. One of the proposals got £5m. of Government aide which should create a substantial number of highly-skilled jobs.

After a busy surgery, I had the 20/20 cricket final between Lowerhouse and Ramsbottom (picture). The ground was packed and Lowerhouse were victorious. It was a great atmosphere and I thank Lowerhouse Cricket Club for allowing there to be collections for the Prostate Scanner Appeal.

On Saturday I opened the new Original Factory Shop in Padiham. It is great to see retailers having confidence in Burnley.

My week ended with a visit to Hameldon Playing fields, off Kiddrow Lane, to see a junior football tournament. There were hundreds of young boys enjoying the day. I met the campaign team, including Neil Mottershead and Charlie Briggs, who are fighting to save the fields from being sold off by the county council.
