Never-to-be forgotten heroes of Colne Dynamoes

A rare column photo indeed, taken half a century ago and showing the mighty Colne Dynamoes Football Team who had just completed their first season in the Nelson and Colne Amatuer Football League Division One.

What a season 1963-64 was for the club. The record shows 24 games played, 20 won, three drawn and only one lost against a very strong Nelson Grammar School Old Boys’ team, with goals scored 102 and goals against just 26 all season.

So who are the players of this legendary team of yesteryear? Back row: left to right, first up is the fearless full-back Gordon Ellis; next we see master mid-fielder Rodney Booth, followed by truly great goalkeeper Brian Clark. Now we see the commanding centre-half Keith Gibbons with team captain and scorer of the Dynamoes’ very first goal Barrie Gibbons; next and end of the row a true notable in the game with over 950 games played, Keith Carradice.

Now front row: left to right, first is the youngest of the Gibbons triumvirate, dextrous defender Peter Gibbons, with 16-year-old, naturally skilled Peter Bourne next, followed by “Mr Dynamoes” himself, prolific goal-scorer Graham White. Now we see the smooth striker Trevor Lonsdale and finally the multitalented Peter Skelton.

Not on our picture are three wizards on the wing, Trevor Riddiough, David Heaton and Mick O’Shea.

Sadly today of these 14 founders of Colne Dynamoes, five are no longer with us, however, their days here with us are never to be forgotten.
