A recent Monday was busy in Parliament, filled with many meetings and a wonderful awards ceremony.

I attended the Avanta awards which were showcasing the achievements of disadvantaged groups, local employers and business start-ups, recognising the impact on local communities nationwide. It was great to speak to the chief executive and hear of the great work taking place and see the important role Avanta plays in supporting job seekers to find employment and the work they are doing in developing their skills offering.

I was then straight to a meeting with Vince and was accompanied by Burnley training professional Ejaz Hussain from Burnley Telematics.

We were discussing apprenticeships and reaching out to disadvantaged groups. The meeting was positive and I look forward to contuining with my apprenticeship work.

I was then back in Burnley to speak at the Rotary Club dinner. I spoke about my role as an MP and the main issues and policies at the moment. I was delighted at the interest shown in the Todmorden Curve and we discussed the Government’s investment in our town and the future of manufactuing. The discussion was very positive and it was a lovely dinner and to see everyone.

I was then back to London on Thursday for the important HS2 debate and votes. The HS2 is vitally important for the UK, and will bring massive benefits. I fully support joining up the North and South and believe this is something that will help unlock our potential as a country.

On Friday I met Hugh Bramwell to discuss their expanding engineering apprenticeship programme. I was impressed to hear all that is going on at the college and how well all the students are getting on.

I then went to collect a cheque from Plumbe Street Miners’ Club for the Prostate Scanner Appeal.

They have done incredible fund-raising for the cause and I am very grateful to them. I then went to William Hill to collect another cheque following the staff doing some fund-raising at small and large events.

They raised £250 and the company has agreed to double the amount to £500 which is fantastic news.

I opened the great new takeaway in Colne Road called Mumbai Indian Cuisine and luckily got to try some of their great food and wish them great success in this venture.

My week was concluded with a fund-raiser dinner at Rosehill Baptist Church. I must say a huge thank to Jean Palmer and her family who did an incredible job cooking and preparing all the wonderful food. £850 was raised which helps us along to our target.
