Burnley: A premier town with a Premier League football team

I was recently in Burnley, getting out and about with local candidates.

I met with Rupali Begum for a walk around part of Daneshouse. We met lots of people with a number of issues, all of which I am trying to resolve. In the evening I had a meeting with some of my colleagues at home to look back over our successes of the past four years, including the opening of the Urgent Care Unit, reinstating of the Todmorden Curve and opening of Burnley Bridge Business Park, all of which have contributed to the town’s current growth and prosperity.

My Friday was busy as usual with many constituent appointments and my regular surgery at Sainsburys. At the moment I am having on-going discussions regarding a number of children in Burnley with autism who are struggling to get the education they deserve. I am trying to table a Backbench Business debate in the House of Commons on the issue. I believe it is not only a problem concerning education providers, Lancashire County Council, but it also seems to be an issue country-wide which urgently needs addressing.

On the Saturday I saw the wonderful Swing Commanders at Nazareth Unitarian Chapel, Padiham, it was a fantastic evening and I am very much looking forward to their next event on June 20th. Featuring the extremely talented Grace O’Malley and Rossendale Scout Band, all proceeds raised will go to the Scanner Appeal. If anyone wants a really enjoyable evening you are more than welcome to attend; tickets are £7, available from a number of places, including the Unitarian Chapel. If you need further details, contact my office.

I also attended the reception at the town hall to celebrate Burnley FC’s promotion to the Premier League. It was great to see thousands of people out on the street to celebrate – we are now a premier town with a premier league team! Burnley’s success in football is teamed with our other achievements this year, most notably being named the most enterprising area in the country. I wish the club much success for next season.
