Six fire engines attended to extinguish the fire shortly after 11-30am today. Due to the thick smoke in the area, local residents were asked to remain indoors and close windows and doors if they could smell or see smoke.

Officials say the fire is now under control, however, road closures in the area still remain in place with Kings Causeway closed in both directions between Walverden Road and Nelson Golf Course (Halifax Road).

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to a fire involving a detached garage and a bungalow at a house on Hillsborough Avenue, Brierfield. Due to the smoke in the area, local residents were asked to go inside and close windows and doors if they could smell or see smoke. Firefighters worked with partner agencies to bring the fire under control and Electricity North West switched the electricity off in the area for a short period of time to help extinguish the fire. By 2pm, the fire was under control and firefighters were damping down. Roads in the area will be affected by the fire until later in the afternoon. One person was taken to hospital by ambulance and the cause of the fire is under investigation."
