The Bishop of Burnley is preparing to prove his bravery this Saturday to raise funds for a Lancashire parish church.
The Rt Rev. Philip North will abseil down the 90ft tower of St John’s Church, Whittle-le-Woods.
I was looking forward to it without much concern until I was at the top of a similar-sized church tower the other dayBishop of Burnley
He is guest of honour at a church fund-raiser at which members of the congregation and local community will follow the Bishop down the tower.
The Bishop will be the first person to make the descent down the landmark at 9-30am.
Bishop Philip said: “I like a challenge and this certainly qualifies. I was looking forward to it without much concern until I was at the top of a similar-sized church tower the other day.
“Having experienced the height at first hand, let’s just say I’m now more than a little apprehensive.
“But the event is for a very good cause and I’m assured I will be in good hands so I’m actually looking forward to it – at least I keep telling myself that.”
The event has been organised by St John’s Church council member Anne Harris who said: “We are delighted Bishop Philip is able to join us on Saturday and has agreed to be the first person down the tower.
“Our church building needs a complete overhaul which requires a lot of money so this event will make a vital contribution to the fundraising for that work.
“The event runs until 4pm and includes a barbecue and demonstrations from the Lancashire Search and Rescue Team. Everyone is welcome at any time, especially if they want to make a descent of the tower.”
There is still time to take part and anyone who wants to do so should contact Anne on firstname.lastname@example.org for a sponsor form.
