Night-time switch-off for M65 lights

LANCASHIRE County Council is switching off street lights on part of the M65 between Colne and Burnley from midnight tonight.

Lights will be switched off between midnight and 5 a.m. - the time when the motorway is least busy - between the end of the motorway and junction 10 at Gannow.

This move is part of Lancashire County Council’s plans to reduce its carbon footprint and save money. It follows the Highways Agency’s decision to switch off street lights on the rest of the motorway.

Mike Kirby, director of transport and strategic highways, said: “We’re always looking for different ways to reduce the amount of energy we use and save taxpayers’ money.

“We feel that switching off the street lights between midnight and 5 a.m. will enable us to do this without compromising safety.

“We will review the decision to switch off the lights in 12 months.”
