Lancashire health professionals will celebrate breast-feeding with a series of events which support mums.

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust will join other health and voluntary organisations in marking National Breastfeeding Celebration Week.

The events will take place across the region from Monday to Saturday next week and have been designed to help tackle the stigma surrounding breast-feeding and create a culture which supports it.

Katie Wharton, Infant Feeding Coordinator at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Breastfeeding isn’t always easy for mums and some face challenges. During this year’s National Breastfeeding Celebration Week, we are highlighting the importance of the right support at the right time by the right person. In Lancashire, everyone has an important role to play in the support, promotion and protection of breastfeeding.

“The value of breastfeeding for mums, babies and society is well evidenced and mothers need support to breastfeed for as long as they wish to. Mums tell us one aspect that impacts their journey is by ensuring we have a community where breastfeeding is welcome. A culture where whenever a baby becomes hungry or needs comfort, whether that’s on the bus, in a café, or at a school assembly, then mum is made to feel comfortable to breastfeed her baby."

Each day throughout the week will have a theme, Katie added, such as myths and facts, new-borns, older babies or children, returning to work or study, and the role of partners, friends and families.

The Department of Health recommends babies are breastfed exclusively for the first six months of their life while infants should be given breastmilk as part of their diet throughout the first one to two years and beyond.
