AN impressive turn-out of villagers and VIPs attended the opening of the newly-refurbished Sawley Village Hall by the Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Coun. Mary Robinson, on Sunday.
She paid tribute to the committee, and the quality of the work achieved in the restoration, which had been done in such a way as to maintain the traditional character of the old school building.
The Mayor was introduced and thanked by village hall committee chairman Mr Kevin Cosgrove, and Alexis Gavan presented her with a beautiful posy.
A great deal of money was raised by villagers themselves and grant funding sought from various agencies plus Ribble Valley Borough Council and the parish council, whose representatives were present.
Unfortunately, the annual picnic had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather, but inside the hall children's TV presenter Lizzie Botham gave a demonstration for the youngsters of throwing and making pots. There were also displays by the spinners and weavers and Sawley Art Group had decorated the hall with paintings.
The project manager for the scheme was Mr Joe Sims, who is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers and whose expertise came in handy. He thanked the committee, the grant agencies and those who donated money for their contributions and also those villagers involved, including the contractors, for their hard work in making the restoration such a success.
