Ribble Valley Borough Council has entered into discussions with Nelson-based Barnfield Construction Ltd regarding a proposed redevelopment of the market site and car park.

Under the joint scheme, Barnfield Construction will research the viability of a retail development at the site and present its findings to the council within the next six months. The research will consider if redevelopment of the site is viable and, if so, what form it might take.

Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stuart Hirst said he was delighted that after many years and several false starts there seemed at last a realistic prospect of redeveloping the market site.

“Barnfield Construction has a superb track record in schemes of this nature and we await the result of their research with interest,” he said. “This is an exciting opportunity for us to work with a premier local construction company to see how the market site might be redeveloped in keeping with Clitheroe Town Centre Masterplan.”

Barnfield’s extensive and prestigious portfolio includes The Globe Centre, Accrington; The Ace Centre, Nelson; Boundary Mill, Colne; Stanley House, Mellor, and Blackfriars, Manchester.

Any proposal will be subject to the planning process.
