New baby and toddler group starts in Whalley

Little fishes - A new baby and toddler group, Whalley Little Fishes, meets on Tuesdays in Whalley Methodist Church hall from 9-15 a.m. to 11 a.m. The group is for parents, grandparents and carers with babies and toddlers aged under five. The session is £1 per family.

WI - Members of Whalley with Mitton WI met in Whalley Abbey when president Mrs Marjorie Mitchell welcomed members and guests. Guest speaker Alison Fleming, of Accrington, spoke about her childhood hobby of making dolls, which became a passion and business and she progressed to porcelain dolls. She was thanked by Mrs Shelia Bowles. Winner of the competition was Mrs Jennifer Lockwood, Mrs Dorothy Gorner.

Sue Butcher’s husband has agreed to replace the plaque at the Millennium Oak Tree at Mitton, and the bulbs planted by Freda Haynes are looking good. Due to increased room and tea costs, tea and biscuits will be £1.50 from next month. The LFWI events are listed in the newsletter, but Pat Hoyle has organised a mystery trip on the afternoon of June 2nd, places are limited so put names down quickly. The other trip is Cheetham’s Music College in September.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 8th. the competition is for an Easter bonnet. Don’t forget the sales table if you have any items you want rid of.

Surgery - A monthly surgery at which the public may discuss any council matter with a parish councillor is being introduced by Whalley Parish Council starting tomorrow in the Methodist Church Hall from 6-30 to 7 p.m. Councillors will vary at each session, the first session being taken by chairman Martin Highton and Coun. June Brown. No appointment will be needed. Surgeries will be held on the third Thursday of each month immediately before the council’s monthly meeting at 7-30 pm in the same hall.

Comedy - A comedy sketch show by Clever Peter, which was a sellout at Brighton Fringle in July 2008, has been booked for Whalley Village Hall on Saturday, April 2nd, at 7-30 pm. Last Saturday the audience enjoyed the Balkanics performance of traditional Balkan and Klezmer tunes with a touch of Irish woven in.

Lent lunches - The Lent lunch, organised by Whalley Christian Action Group, is held in the Methodist Church Hall. A light lunch will be served at 11-45 a.m. followed by a talk and discusion. The Rev. Michelle Jarmany, of Clitheroe, will speak on “Home of a Pharisee”.

Giving renewal - Parishioners of English Martyrs’ RC Church, Whalley, are being asked to attend a planned giving renewal over two weekends, on March 19th and 20th and on March 26th and 27th. It will be conducted by Derek Pearce, who worked for Cardinal Hulme, managing the financial affairs of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

The congregation is mourning Fr Joe Feeley, a respected priest in the deanery, who officiated at St Mary’s, Clayton-le-Moors, for years.
