Nelson mum left ‘judo expert’ injured after attack

Rachel Elizabeth Ellen Plant (26) punched Stephen Twist twice and kicked him to the back of the legs after, she claimed, he had been goading her about her late sister.

Mr Twist, said to be a black belt second dan, had had a relationship with Plant’s sister, who died very suddenly in her sleep some time ago.

Burnley magistrates heard how the victim suffered a swollen eye after the “unpleasant” incident outside The Lord Nelson, on June 6th.

Plant, who looks after her mother who has multiple sclerosis, and her brother who lost his legs serving in Afghanistan, was described by the probation service as a binge drinker.

The defendant, of Napier Street, Nelson, admitted assault by beating. The Bench, who said the assault was serious and went on for some time, imposed a six month community order, with a 15 day rehabilitation activity requirement.

She must pay £100 compensation, £85 costs, a £60 victim surcharge, a £150 criminal court charge and a £10 fine.

Mr Mark Williams (defending) said: “The defendant lost her sister very suddenly. She passed away in her sleep. Occasionally, the defendant goes out and probably drinks more than is good for her.”
