Nelson men face £6.4 million drug smuggling charge

Two men from Pendle, along with one from Yorkshire, will today appear in court charged with drug smuggling after heroin with an estimated street value of £6.4 million was seized in the north of England.

Investigators tracked a consignment of furniture that was imported through Royal Liverpool Seaforth Docks from Pakistan, via Dubai, in May, 2012.

The furniture was then delivered to storage units in the Nelson and Dewsbury areas.

Border Force investigators, along with colleagues from the North Yorkshire Regional Organised Crime Unit and the North West Serious Organised Crime Agency, then raided the units and seized 35 kilos of heroin.

The three British men – not yet named – have since been charged with conspiracy to import a Class A drug. Two of the men charged live in Nelson, with the other living in Dewsbury.

All three are due to appear at Trafford Magistrates’ Court in Manchester today.

Sam Bullimore, Border Force Assistant Director in the North West, said: “This is a considerable seizure that will keep a large amount of heroin off Britain’s streets.

“It is also an excellent example of how Border Force works closely with partner agencies to crack down on drug trafficking.”
