Nelson man had knife in shoe for ‘peace of mind’

A MAN was found to have a kitchen knife hidden in his shoe after he arrived at Burnley Police Station.

Pennine magistrates were told how Mubeen Akram had been arrested for possessing cannabis. While he was in custody, the 4in. knife was discovered. There was no suggestion it had been used by him.

Akram (24), of Chapelhouse Road, Nelson, admitted possessing a knife blade in a public place and possessing cannabis. He was given a three-month curfew between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. The defendant must pay £85 costs.

Mr John Rusius, for Akram, said he had been badly assaulted and had the knife as it gave him peace of mind. The solicitor added: “He would never use it unless he was in fear of his life.”
