Nelson man (73) jailed for rape - 40 years on

A PERVERT who raped and repeatedly molested a girl has been locked up for eight years, four decades on.

Rodney Miles, now 73 and said to be in failing health, had made the victim out to be a liar when his sordid behaviour was uncovered. The defendant had carried out various sex acts on the girl and had made her perform an indecent act on him, Burnley Crown Court heard.

Miles, who is now said to be suffering from cancer, was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.

The defendant, of Brunswick Street, Nelson, had admitted rape, seven counts of indecent assault and one charge of indecency with a child.

The court had earlier heard how Miles exposed himself to the child and then put his hand down her underwear. He made her perform a sex act on him and told her not to tell anyone what had gone on.

The offices came to light this year when the victim made a complaint to the police. Miles was arrested, questioned and went on to own up.

The defendant had a record for sexual offending. In 2000, he had appeared in court after offering young girls cash to perform sex acts on him.

Mr Martin Hackett, for Miles, said he was in a bad state of health. The defendant was suffering from prostate cancer.
