Nelson girl’s brave cancer fight

MEMBERS of a Nelson housing association are rallying round to raise funds for a brave young girl who has been diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer.

Five-year-old Shaylee Houghton, who lives on Hodge House estate with her mother Gemma, is suffering from grade four glioblastoma multiform, a form of cancer which doctors say has only a tiny chance of cure.

And Hodge House Residents’ Association is organising a series of fund-raising events to help Shaylee, a pupil at Holy Saviour RC Primary School, and Gemma over the coming months.

Facebook and Youtube pages about Shaylee’s condition have been set up on the estate and both are proving popular, with a video called “Shaylee’s Story” attracting a lot of interest.

Among events lined up are tombolas, a concert, sponsored walk, pub crawl and mixed rugby union game involving players from Pendle Phoenix RUFC, who play home games at Hodge House.

Fund-raising group secretary Sharon Morgan said there had already been a good deal of support from locals and asked anyone wishing to get involved to call a special number set up for the campaign - 07833 510488.

“We want to do all we can to help Shaylee and want to thank all those who have supported us so far,” said Sharon and Gemma.

Shaylee is currently undergoing radiotherapy at the Christie Hospital, Manchester, following her diagnosis at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital last month.
