Nelson dentists retire after 30 years in practice

It was when dentist Mr Bill Hacking retired that the husband and wife team took over his premises in Scotland Road, now known as Dentistry for All.

Since then, the practice has seen many changes, reflecting not only changes in dentistry nationally, but their desire to achieve a high standard of care for their patients.

They have extended the practice to nine surgeries and taken on a dental care team, using the skills of hygienists, dental therapists and extended duty dental nurses.

Dentistry for All is one of 60 dentistries nationwide piloting a scheme aimed a more preventative approach to patients’ treatment.

In 2003, dentist Ian Redfearn joined Mr and Mrs Taylor in the partnership. Now Mr Redfearn will remain in the partnership, but Mr and Mrs Taylor have passed over their share to Mr Neil Huddart and Mr Noel Bowen, two long-standing associates.

Mr Taylor said: “We have very much enjoyed our time in Nelson, and have appreciated the loyalty and support of all our patients, many of whom have become friends.

“It is with very mixed feelings we make the move. But we feel the time is right.”

Mr and Mrs Taylor feel that with Neil, Noel and Ian at the helm, the right people are in place.

Mrs Taylor said: “Our very capable practice manager, Pauline Hargreaves, will ensure the practice continues to run smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. The whole team has been excellent.”

Mr Taylor will continue to be involved in post-graduate dentistry education and training. He has been involved with the professional executive committee of the local primary care trust for the past decade.

Both of them have been volunteers with Mercy Ships, travelling to Africa to carry out dentistry work for the poor.

Both Mr and Mrs Taylor attend The Mission in Goitside, Nelson. They will continue to live in Pendle.

Now Mrs Taylor is working on a theology degree.
