Nelson Battle of Britain hero dies

The flag at Nelson Golf Club flew at half-mast to mark the passing of one of its oldest and respected members.

Former works study engineer David Holberry Bell, of Clover Hill Road, Nelson, died at home, aged 91. His funeral at Burnley Crematorium takes place today (Wednesday).

It was only after his death, on July 4th, that his family discovered he had been presented with the Battle of Britain medal for his services as a fighter pilot during the Second World War, in addition to the Italy Star and 1939-45 service medal.

Away from work, he was a keen golfer and a Freemason, becoming a Worshipful Grand Master of Colne Masonic Lodge.

Mr Bell was widowed last year. He and his late wife, Anne, had been married for more than 40 years. He leaves his son, David, and seven grandchildren.

Donations in Mr Bell’s memory are being given to Pendleside Hospice.
