Must dash - it’s Movember! Grow a moustache for charity

IT’S that time of year again when men who are normally clean-shaven begin to sprout hair above their stiff upper lip ... and leave it there.

During November each year, “Movember” is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim is to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

On or around Movember 1st, men register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as “Mo Bros”, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives (Mo Sistas) Movember Mo Bros can raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

They also raise awareness of often-ignored men’s health issues by becoming walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate by throwing a Movember party. The whole idea started in 2003 in Australia and has spread to become a global phenomena, attracting ever-increasing numbers of men, including many celebrities.

Key to its success has been the increasing involvement of another worldwide movement, Round Table, with its members enthusiastically embracing Movember.

In Clitheroe, local Round Tablers have been busy registering themselves and getting other men to do the same. They already have around 18 mo-growers signed up and have raised more than £600, hopefully with more to come. You can find out more about their efforts at http://uk.movember.com/mospace/network/roundtablearea34 The Clitheroe Round Tablers’ end party is an authorised official Movember event this year and will take place on November 30th at the Inn at the Station.

So face facts fellas... it’s time to grow a tache and raise some cash.
