Muslim women unite to condemn ISIS

A group of around 15 came together to make a united stand “against the barbarism of ISIS” and discuss the role they have to challenge hateful views.

They were visited by director of Inspire Sara Khan, as part of the counter extremism and human rights organisation’s #MakingAStand campaign.

The campaign was launched last year in a bid to stop the damage caused by extremists poisoning young minds. The visit to Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre was part of a nationwide series of events, and gave women a forum to discuss and share tips.

According to Sara, the group are now keen to set up a monthly group to take their work forward.

She said: “I was delighted with the strong turn-out for the event in Burnley. Women are the backbone of the community and the first line of defence against radicialisers.

“The women I met from the area know our role in challenging extremism is vital and honourable. They value and believe in the principles of democracy, human rights and respect for all life.

“This is in complete contrast to the sheer evil and barbarism of the very ‘un-Islamic’ extremist groups who murder, rape and steal in the name of Islam. Abhorrent groups like ISIS and Al Qaida distort the teachings of our faith and are a menace to our way of life - our families, communities and women’s rights.”

The group discussed positive steps in making their voices heard to help create a stronger and cohesive community, including using social media, exerting their influence in their mosque and community, becoming a school governor, defending women’s rights, and giving to charity.
