Musicians in running for £16,000 prize

They are two of 11 young musicians from Lancashire and Yorkshire, ranging from classical instrumentalists to rock students and singers, who will showcase their talents on Sunday, March 13th, at The Muni in Colne.

They were all selected after sending recordings of themselves for judging in the Pendle Young Musicians’ Bursary scheme.

Soprano Megan Ingham (21), of Woodgrove Road, is a member of Burnley Light Opera and is studying at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

Woodwind player Eleanor Tomlinson (17), of Blackburn Road, Padiham, was a regional finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and has won a place to study recorder at Birmingham Conservatoire.

From Pendle, there is guitarist Andrew Danson (16), a student at Burnley College; multi-instrumentalist and singer Ross Munro (18), of Trawden, also studying at Burnley College and Charlotte Waters (18), of Colne, who sings with Leeds Youth Opera.

“We’ve had a record response from young musicians, and the standard is extremely high,” said bursary administrator Susan Eames.

The bursary scheme, held every two years, is being supported by Manchester Camerata, who give guidance and advice. The prize money is £16,000, to be shared among the eventual winners, to help them continue their musical studies.
