Mum of two spared jail in drugs case

A mother-of-two who helped her boyfriend in his cannabis supplying enterprise was spared prison after a judge said jail would have a highly detrimental effect on her children.

Burnley Crown Court was told how Anne Aston (37) was caught after police raided the home she then shared with Steven Kelly on Colbran Street, last June 2nd. Officers found drugs-related messages on her mobile telephone.

Aston, who has never been in trouble before, had admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis, committed on April 16th last year.

She was given a community order with a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

Mr Stephen Parker (prosecuting) said police found just over 12g of cannabis. Steven Kelly had pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply and supplying drugs. He had a telephone littered with drugs messages.

Sentencing the defendant, Judge James Adkin said she had assisted her boyfriend in his cannabis enterprise.

He said: “You acted as a conduit for him.”

The judge added that sentencing guidelines suggested that sometimes people in her circumstances could he jailed for up to 26 weeks.
