Members of the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue team raced to Hurstwood Reservoir in Worsthorne after receiving reports the 65-year-old woman had suffered head injuries and broken her collarbone in the incident just before 10am.

Crews from the Hazardous Area Response Team known as HART were also at the scene.

A spokesman for the mountain rescue said: "Normally this would be quite a tricky spot for the air ambulance to land but as the water levels have fallen recently the pilot found a small beach area to land safely.

"Although not steep there are a lot of quite sharp rocks around the reservoir. We stretchered the casualty to the helicopter and she was chatting and seemed to be in good spirits although she was in a lot of pain."

The woman was flown to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.
