More pupils get first choice school in Lancashire

Just over 99% per cent of the 13,060 pupils moving up from primary school to high school are going to one of their three preferred schools – and this figure will rise as waiting lists and appeals take effect.

The figures released by Lancashire County Council also show 92.5% have received an offer for their first preference – up by more than half a percent from last year.

Unlike other areas of the country, Lancashire schools do not need to use random selection or banding, and so far there have been no problems with fraudulent applications.

County Coun. Susie Charles, Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, said: “The increase in number of first choices being met reflects the good standard of school provision available across the county.

“With over 13,000 children transferring to secondary schools in Lancashire, it is inevitable that there will be disappointments for a few families, but it is very satisfying that the figures are so high.”

Primary school places are announced in April.
