More alleygates planned for Burnley

The council has set aside just over £51,000 in this year’s capital programme to help fund more security gates at “hot spots”, following consultation with residents.

That is double the previous annual amount set aside for alleygating - meaning twice the number of schemes can go ahead this year.

The council has been using alleygating as a method of reducing crime and disorder affecting some back streets of the borough since 2004.

With 124 schemes currently in place across Burnley and Padiham, demand remains high and there are currently nearly 100 applications on the list for consideration.

There is funding in place in the current financial year to provide 10 new schemes which have been identified from this list as priorities, with consultation work scheduled to start in September and completion of the new schemes completed by March 2019.

Coun. Lian Pate, executive member for community and environmental services, said: “We will continue to work with residents and communities to tackle crime and anti-social behavior. Alleygating is just one of the ways that we do that.

“There is high demand for alleygates. We’ve doubled the budget which means double the number of schemes can go ahead but we still have to make sure that alleygating is used where it is most needed and will be most effective in improving the quality of life for local residents.”

An update on the council’s capital budget will be presented to its executive on August 14th.
