An eyesore building on a gateway into Burnley is set to be demolished as part of plans to create a new support centre for homeless and vulnerable people.

The site of the former Mitre pub, off Westgate, which has been empty for more than 20 years, has been earmarked by social landlord Calico which plans to unveil a new “wellbeing” project to replace the company’s current Elizabeth Street project.

The side of the former pub recently made the headlines when it was adorned with a mural of Clarets manager Sean Dyche, celebrating Burnley’s recent promotion to the Premier League.

The new building would have 30 rooms, with space for community projects and training – plans which have won the backing of Burnley Council.

Helen Thompson, Calico’s director of Customer Services, said: “For years now, thousands of people have benefitted from support, emergency housing and help to find new homes through the Elizabeth Street Project.

“However, that facility is not ideal due to its layout. A brand new, custom-built project to help people get back on their feet with rehousing, support and employment training will be a fantastic resource for the area.

“We will also make sure we work closely with key partners to provide services people may need and take referrals for those who would benefit from our programmes.”

According to plans which have now been submitted, the facility, which would be built in Mitre Street, will be specifically designed to ensure services improve people’s health and wellbeing.

It will also develop individuals’ skills and employability, and support them to move on to permanent accommodation.

The scheme would provide much more modern and improved accommodation than the Elizabeth Street Project, Calico’s existing homeless facility since 2004, which has helped thousands of people and families to get back on their feet.

Mick Cartledge, Burnley Council’s Director of Community Services, said: “We are pleased to see Calico’s exciting new plans for this important service and the development of this flagship building will also greatly improve the physical environment of this part of the town.”

Work on the development would be carried out by Ring Stones Maintenance and Construction and, once approved, would be completed by late next year.

Services will continue to be delivered at the existing site while work is underway on the new facility.
