Masked men raid jewellers

FOUR masked men raided a jewellers’ shop on a Nelson main street on Friday afternoon.

They smashed their way in but then left without taking any property and got into a getaway car.

Shortly afterwards, five arrests were made in Greater Manchester and they were then transferred to Lancashire to be interviewed by detectives investigating the incidemt.

It happened around 2-50 p.m. at the City of Gold store on Manchester Road, which is between Wilkinson’s Hifi store and the Spice of India restaurant.

The head of Pennine CID, Det. Insp. Dave Groombridge,is leading the investigation. He said: “Possibly four masked offenders entered the shop by force. While they got into the jewellers shop they appeared to leave without any stolen property.

“They were pursued out of the shop by two members of staff and got away in a get-away vehicle. It was later found abandoned.”

And DI Groombridge added: “Later, five people were arrested in Greater Manchester and have been brought to Lancashire for interview.”

DI Groombridge said there was some suggestion the men who raided the shop did have weapons with them, but not firearms. No one was injured in the raid.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the crime. Shop owner Mr Imran Ali said he was relieved that jewellery had not been stolen during the incident.
