A day later, between 9pm and 10pm, the victim was walking along Moorland Drive when he was hit on the back of the head close to the junction with Higher Reedley Road.

He fell to the floor and was repeatedly punched, kicked and hit with an unknown weapon.

The offenders made off and the man returned to his home address before calling an ambulance. He suffered a broken jaw and fractured eye socket in the attack and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

Detectives are treating both assaults as linked and are particularly keen to speak to a woman they believe witnessed the first incident in Burnley Road.

DC Lee Walker, of Burnley CID, said: “These assaults were particularly brutal in nature and left the victim requiring hospital treatment.

“During the first assault, the male was chased inside a shop. We believe a white female, in her early 20s, was in the store as a customer at the time and I am particularly keen to trace her.

“If you saw this attack, I would urge you to contact us immediately.

“Likewise, if you saw the second assault or have any information that could help, please call police.”
